eSafety checks (sometimes referred to as a pink slip) are required for most light vehicles that are five years or older before you are able to renew your car registration. This requirement is put in place to ensure that your vehicle meets minimum safety requirements.
The eSaftey check needs to be undertaken by a certified mechanic, however, it is always important for you to ensure that your car maintains the minimum safety.
There are a few things you can check (and fix if required) before getting your eSafety pink slip check:
- All lights, including headlights, indicators, fog lights, brake lights, and reverse lights are to be in complete working order. The easiest way to check these is to have someone outside the car to check while you test.
- All seatbelts are to be in good working condition. When checking your seatbelts, check the anchor points, retractor, seatbelt lock, and look for any wearing or fraying.
- Any cracks in the windscreen need to be looked at. If the crack is over 7cm long, it will need to be replaced. In addition, the windscreen wipers must be in full working order.
- All four tyres are to have at least 1.5mm tread depth remaining in them. Any exposed canvas will also need to be fixed.
- The horn is one of the most important safety features of the car. Test by using the horn to ensure that it is working properly.
- All doors are to be working in every aspect from operating door controls, ability to open and close securely from the inside and outside, and ability to lock and unlock.
- Check for any visual leaks, including oil or radiator leaks, and exhaust system leaks.
- A car that contains rust may cause bigger issues, and not pass. You can see if the car has any substantial rust by looking for signs of breaks in the surface or bubbles in the paint.
